DAY 5 and 6 August 31 and September 1 (Day 2 and 3 on the boat)

Krys is taking the day off so I was assigned writing duties. Krys has retained her right to edit.

August 31

Started the day at the breakfast buffet to make sure we were prepared for a Strasbourg city walk. The old city is simply beautiful and steeped in history. It has been forced to switch from French to German and back again several times over the centuries.

At the old city center is an impressive cathedral known as the little Notre Dame. Walking the streets you really begin to get a sense of being in France. The multitude of sidewalk cafes, the style of dress, the women, um, the people. (edited)

Followed up with a canal boat ride around the old city through hand operated locks hundreds of years old. Cruising along parks full of people and the dichotomy of modern electric trains next to buildings dating from the 1500's.

A wonderful lunch at one of those sidewalk cafes required a trip back to the boat for a short nap. In the evening back to the cathedral for a private tour and organ concert on a massive pipe organ. One item of interest was that during WWII, the US removed the stained glass and hid it in salt caverns prior to bombing industry in the city. After the war it was returned and replaced.

September 1

Slept in, woke to find ourselves in Mannheim, Germany. Quiet breakfast followed by an interesting lecture of the relationship between France and Germany over the years. Then it was off to Heidelberg Castle,

followed by a walking tour of Heidelberg. The walking tour led our foursome straight to an old brewery and a flight of local selections.

Finished the day with a wonderful dinner, an amazing singer and a nightcap on the roof with great friends!

  1. Sounds like an amazing couple of days! Beautiful, historic scenery and delicious food! And you found a brewery!! Doesn't get any better than that. Loved the nightcap on the roof to end the day. Charlie says, "Krys deserves a break from the writing and you did a great job. Keep it coming!"
